With the stress of the US election and its results still ringing in our ears, I think we could all use a post that reminds us of the beauty that still exists in America. Last month, I visited the southern parts of the Oregon coast for a short trip, only to find some of the most striking and ethereal spots in the state – and that’s saying something!
I started my journey in the small seaside town of Brookings and continued all the way up to Cape Blanco, before cutting back to the Eugene area after my trip. The drive took two days in total and there were a lot of gems along the way.
Starting in Brookings, I had the fanciest Bloody Mary and the tastiest fresh oyster shooters from Fat Irish Kitchen & Pub. Up the coast, I took in the forested scenes of Hwy 101 through the Samuel H Boardman Scenic Corridor, finding trails directly off the highway that led to grand ocean vistas.
In Gold Beach, I went on a jet boat ride with Jerry’s Rogue Jets down the rugged Rogue river. It was a beautiful day in Oregon, and the memories of sun glinting off the cool blue water of the Rogue River are not ones I’ll soon forget.
Jerry’s is also the oldest commercial jet boat company in the US, having been around since 1958. Before the company added on jet boat tours, they had been doing mail deliveries for local residents up and down the Rogue River since 1895. They still deliver mail to locals to this day.
In Port Orford, I learned about the bloody history of Battle Rock City Park, caught a proper Oregon storm, and stayed in a Bon Iver-esque retreat in the woods. It was seriously all of my Pacific Northwest dreams come true. On my last day on the coast I went up as far as Florence to fit in Cape Blanco, Bandon, and Shore Acres State Park.
These 20 photos should thoroughly convince you to take your own road trip up the southern Oregon coast soon. It is a magical place in this country and one that may just take your post-election blues away.
Note: I was a guest of the Southern Oregon Coast Visitors Association, but all opinions are my own.
