Getting a work visa in Australia can be as easy as filling out an online form in 15 minutes.

It always surprises me how many Americans don’t know about the working holiday visa in Australia.

To be fair, I was one of those Americans too, until I took my first solo venture to Europe and made friends from a variety of different countries. One of those friends happened to be British, and she told me about the working holiday visa she was planning on doing in Australia, and how she thought it applied to Americans too.

In an instant, the course of my life changed drastically.

Travel Budgeting for Laos

Travel budgeting for Laos - Asia Travel

To continue my travel budgeting series around Asia, next up is Laos!

I finally made it to Laos after missing it during my last trip to Asia in 2013. Since I went in the low season this year, I found it harder in some aspects for traveling around and budgeting.

I still managed to meet quite a few new traveler friends, but starting off my time in the country with a week straight of heavy rains in Luang Prabang, put a bit of a damper on my time, literally.

Offseason or not, Laos turned out to be on par, or even a little cheaper, than its neighboring Southeast Asian countries of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Food and drink especially were inexpensive and accommodation prices varied a lot depending on where I was in the country.

This is everything I spent during my 28 days in Laos!

To continue my travel budgeting series around Asia, next up is Hong Kong!

Hong Kong was actually my first Asian destination for this trip, but I somehow didn’t get to this budgeting post until now. I think it’s because I’ve spent the least amount of time in Hong Kong so far, so it wasn’t as much of a priority.

But, the time has come to talk about travel budgeting for this metropolitan city. Hong Kong is one of the most expensive places in Asia, so it’s good to know what you should budget before you arrive.

Is Myanmar Expensive? Travel Budgeting for Myanmar

Is Myanmar Expensive? Myanmar Travel Budgeting | Asia

Is Myanmar Expensive? I actually found it to be the least expensive country in Southeast Asia.

To continue my travel budgeting series around Asia, next up is Myanmar!

Myanmar can be a wild card when it comes to budgeting. Although you can research and read blog posts like the one you’re currently reading about what to expect, you can never be too sure when it comes to this country. Prices are constantly changing, as well as the information on Myanmar as a whole.

I wrote up a Myanmar travel blog post on 12 things to know before you go to Myanmar, and it’s a good reference from which to base your travels. I came across so many posts from 2014 and 2015 in my research, and almost all of them were already out of date.

Is Taiwan Cheap? Travel Budgeting for Taiwan

is Taiwan cheap | Tachung, Taiwan - Asia Travel

Note: this post contains affiliate links

Is Taiwan cheap to travel? I’m here to answer all of your budgeting questions about this underrated Asian country from my month and a half of living in Taiwan.

Taiwan was exactly what I needed after fast-paced Hong Kong. It was also a much needed relief on my budget. Although Taiwan is definitely not the cheapest destination in Asia, it was a hell of a lot cheaper than Hong Kong.

I adored the good humored and playful nature of Taiwanese culture, and the friendliness that I came across time and again.

Besides a couple of rogue bus drivers who refused to let us off because they were late for the rest of their route (um, what?), I had very few negative experiences in the country. In fact, Taiwan is right up there with Vietnam as one of my favorite countries in Asia thus far.

A Guide to Visas in Asia

Monkey in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The other night, I spent close to 3 hours researching where I want to go in Asia. Let me be honest, I’m not heading back to Asia for awhile yet (Oct/Nov 2016), but I made the mistake of going to a bookstore and I quickly became lost in the travel section. And I’m not talking about just any old bookstore, I’m talking about the largest bookstore in the WORLD, Powell’s City of Books. It takes up a whole city block in Portland, and the travel section alone is a good corner of that block.
