TL;DR: I’d give the Cole Haan GrandPrø Topspin sneakers an 8/10 overall for travel. They’re a great option if you want dressier leather sneakers that go with everything and still have excellent cushioning.

I’ve spent years looking for a travel shoe that can do two specific things. I want something I can walk in all day, but I also want it to be cute enough to go with everything, even dresses. Versatility is so important for travel!

For this Cole Haan shoes review, I focused specifically on testing the women’s GrandPrø Topspin sneakers. They’re the Cole Haan pair I’ve seen recommended a lot for travel because they’re polished but apparently still very comfortable.

I’ve tested a lot of travel shoes for this site, and I also know how quickly my sensitive feet make themselves known when a shoe isn’t working for me. I bought the Topspin to see how well that polished-but-walkable promise held up for my feet.

Note: I bought the Cole Haan GrandPrø Topspin sneakers myself, and this review is not sponsored.

Pros

  • Excellent cushioning
  • Soft heel padding with a secure fit (no blisters!)
  • More flexible than I expected from a leather sneaker
  • A removable insole that can be swapped for more support
  • Clean stitching and high quality leather
  • Good traction on the bottom
  • Versatile dressier look that works with everything

Cons

  • Little to no noticeable built-in arch support
  • Narrow design gave me some pinky toe rubbing
  • Leather upper ran warm during testing
  • Visible leather wrinkling after first wear
  • An almond-shaped toe and brown border that won’t suit everyone’s style

What Is Cole Haan?

Cole Haan began as a dress-shoe company and has grown into a footwear brand for both men and women, with styles that range from oxfords and loafers to heels, boots, and sneakers. The brand is best known for blending polished, classic styling with lighter, sport-inspired comfort.

Cole Haan shoes tend to sit between traditional dress shoes and athletic sneakers: more refined than a running shoe, but designed to feel less stiff and formal. The GrandPrø collection is one of the clearest examples of that approach.

The GrandPrø Topspin sneakers looked exactly like the sort of shoe that could go either way on my feet.

I have flat feet, overpronation, and a bunion on my left foot, and its narrow shape was obvious as soon as I put it on. At the same time, the leather felt more flexible and the sole more cushioned than I expected.

I got the White/Dove color in my usual women’s size US 10.5 and wore it for a 10,000 step test to see if it would hold up to longer travel days on my feet. These were my overall thoughts.

Comfort, Cushioning, and Arch Support

The cushioning is my favorite part of the GrandPrø Topspin. It felt especially good under my heel and forefoot, and the soft padding around the heel was nice as well and didn’t give me any blisters.

My feet were still comfortable at the end of the long walk, with no arch pain or fatigue. That’s impressive for a leather sneaker, especially one that looks dressier than the walking shoes I usually test.

The leather was more flexible than I expected too. I noticed some stiffness across the top, but the shoe didn’t feel rigid overall.

Cushioning and arch support aren’t the same thing, and the Topspin is a good example of the difference. The shoe felt soft underfoot, but I noticed little to no built-in arch support.

With that said, my feet usually roll inward as I walk when there’s no arch support, and I didn’t notice that while wearing these. Maybe due to the narrow design which still held my foot mostly in place.

The insole is removable, so you can swap in your own. I still like these shoes, but I’d add more support before wearing them for a full sightseeing day.

Fit and Sizing

Cole Haan says these shoes run small and recommends going up half a size. However, for me, my usual women’s size 10.5 fit well, so I’d say that they actually run pretty true to size.

I didn’t notice any toe or bunion rubbing during the walk. The next day, though, my pinky toes were a little sore so there must’ve been some rubbing. If your foot is narrow or average-width, I’d start with your normal size and pay close attention to the outer toes while you walk around at home.

If you need more room or plan to add an insole, Cole Haan’s half-size-up advice may make more sense. They also have wide width options for this shoe.

Breathability and Traction

These shoes ran warm during testing. Meaning, I wouldn’t make it my first choice for a hot summer trip, especially if your feet tend to overheat in leather shoes.

I did like how grippy the outsole was, and it felt like it would be non-slip on smooth surfaces like stone (for a Europe trip).

Style and Quality

The GrandPrø Topspin has a classic white leather sneaker look with a narrow, slightly platformed shape. I got it in the very neutral White/Dove color and it worked well with skirts and dresses and looked more refined than a typical athletic walking shoe.

The stitching was clean and the leather was high quality, although it did have visible wrinkling after walking 10,000 steps in them.

I haven’t had them long enough to judge their long-term durability, but it’s just something to note. It may matter if you want your white sneakers to stay smooth-looking for as long as possible.

In the end, I felt like the unique shape and style of these wasn’t quite my vibe. I couldn’t get past the almond-shaped toe or the brown border.

Neither detail affected how the shoes felt, but I didn’t like them enough to keep them. That’s more of a personal preference thing, and you might feel differently about the look.

FAQs About Cole Haan Shoes

Is Cole Haan a Luxury Brand?

I’d describe Cole Haan as a premium footwear brand rather than a traditional luxury house. It focuses on polished styling, craftsmanship, and comfort, but its shoes are generally more accessible than heritage luxury labels.

Where Are Cole Haan Shoes Made?

Their footwear and handbags are mostly made in Vietnam and India. Some of their other products are manufactured in China, South Korea, and the Philippines, so check the label on the exact item if the country of origin matters to you.

Does Cole Haan make wide shoes?

Yes. Cole Haan offers the GrandPrø Topspin in Medium and Wide widths, although the available sizes and colors can change. I’d consider the Wide if you usually need more space through the forefoot.

Are Cole Haan shoes real leather?

Some are. The GrandPrø Topspin I tested has a leather upper, but Cole Haan uses different materials across its shoe lines. Check the materials for the exact style and color you’re considering.

How to Clean Cole Haan Shoes

The right method depends on the material. For smooth leather, Cole Haan recommends brushing away loose dirt, applying leather conditioner with a clean cloth, letting the shoes dry, and finishing with shoe cream and a buffing brush.

Use the brand’s material-specific care instructions for suede, canvas, patent leather, or waterproof leather.

Final Thoughts: Are Cole Haan Shoes Worth It?

Yes, the GrandPrø Topspin sneakers are worth considering if you want a dressier leather sneaker with excellent cushioning, especially if you have a narrow-to-average foot and don’t mind adding your own insole if you need more arch support.

I’d skip them if you tend to run hot or want noticeable arch support straight out of the box.

I did end up returning mine because the style wasn’t quite me, but I could see them working well for someone who likes that almond-toe sneaker look.
