A guide to the best Oahu hikes to tackle while you’re soaking up that island sun, because every trip to the tropics should have a little adventure!
Oahu is an island geared for adventure – both on land and sea. Although there are plenty of water activities to partake in to your heart’s content, Oahu hikes are worth a day or two of exploration if you want to have the best combination of good views and a decent workout.
From waterfalls to pillboxes and coastal breezes, these are the top Oahu hikes I’d recommend for any hiker, in order of easiest to the most difficult trails.
Pack your rain jacket, prepare for the tropics and some of the best island viewpoints of your life. Welcome to Oahu!
The recent warm weather in the Pacific Northwest is quickly defrosting the long Portland winter away from my bones. It has been such nice weather in Portland in the last week, it has almost been too nice. When we had a humid lightening storm last night, I felt like we were back in the tropics.
I had the chance to explore Hawaii – Oahu and Maui – around this time last year on our way from New Zealand, and it is still a cherished memory. I had wanted to go to Hawaii for ages so you could say I was delighted to have been able to fit it into my travels last year.
So, when can I go back again?
Experiencing the Haleakala Crater hike in Maui. This was my experience tackling one of the most breathtaking hikes on the island.
As soon as our plane leaned towards the windswept palm trees on our descent down to Kahului Airport in Maui, I had a feeling of instant joy spread through me. A small sigh of relief escaped my lips when we landed on the tarmac with little to no turbulence, a feat for the windiest airport in Hawaii.
Coming into Maui from above, I was able to look over the landscape and see exactly what activities were in store for me – most notably, conquering Haleakala Crater hike – the largest dormant volcano in the world.
The volcano stands at over 10,000 feet and is one of the major adventure activities to do in Maui. There are bike tours at sunrise, hikes, or even bus loads that quickly take you up to the top and back down if that’s more your style.

Our plane gracefully landed on the windy shores of Maui, Hawaii and I could barely contain my excitement. We had already spent a few days in Oahu, but the island I’ve always been drawn to is Maui.
Hawaii. I can hear the birds singing, the waves crashing, and the ukulele playing, just thinking back to my time on the island. When I went to Oahu in March, it was my first time in Hawaii and the perfect way to say hello again to my home country.
