8 Things to do in Taupo for an Adventurous Weekend

things to do in Taupo

The best things to do in Taupo – from the Tongariro Crossing to natural hot springs, street art, and skydiving.

With a population of just over 20,000, there are a surprisingly large number of things to do in Taupo, a small mountain town surrounded by stunning landscapes in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand.

Living on the Pacific Coast and in a very flat part of California for most of my life, I’m still getting used to the variety of terrain to be found around New Zealand.

I think the only thing missing in Taupo is a proper beach (which isn’t surprising, being that it’s smack dab in the middle of the North Island), but since I was visiting during the winter anyway, I was content to drool over the picturesque snowcapped mountains and bathe in the natural hot springs.

My 28th Year: On the Places I Once Called Home

Solo traveling through Sydney, Australia in 2013 - The Atlas Heart

You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart always will be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place. // Miriam Adeney

I’m currently on a train in Scotland, rolling through the lush green countryside. There are deep blue-grey lochs on my left and clean white light filtering through the many windows in my car.

This is my life, or at least it has been for the past 5 years. I somehow find myself in the most beautiful places, usually by myself, or all to myself, if you frame it that way.

It’s my 28th birthday this Saturday. The past years have been a whirlwind of travel memories, some of my strongest friendships, losses, and countless new beginnings.

Due East of Auckland, it’s a popular weekend getaway for those living in the city, and a great place to find isolation, tropical weather and alluring beaches.

What I Really Thought of Christchurch

Christchurch Construction - New Zealand

I have to be honest with you guys, I’ve been putting this post off for months.

I try to start and every time I stare into the blank page, the cursor blinking back at me, taunting me to begin. The truth is, Christchurch is a hard place to talk about because it’s not a place that I enjoyed. It’s a difficult statement to make for me, because it’s a city that has been through so much and one that I wanted to support and love with open arms.

But, in the spirit of sincerity, I thought it was finally time to share with you all what I really thought of Christchurch.
