5 Tieks Alternatives: Flats Comparable to Tieks but Cheaper

It took me about four years to finally buy my first pair of Tieks. I’d heard about them constantly, but I was traveling on a backpacker budget at the time and couldn’t talk myself into spending that much on flats when I’d never spent close to it before.

When I finally caved in 2017, I understood the hype. They went around the world with me as my main travel flat, and I still wear mine from time to time nine years later. But I also remember those four years before I bought my first pair, cycling through cheap flats that fell apart or tore up my heels, wishing someone would just tell me what a good, more affordable alternative was.

That’s where this article comes in. Tieks are a great shoe, but they start around $210 for the classics and only climb from there. The flats market has gotten a lot better since I first went looking, and the best Tieks alternatives give you the same packable, go-with-everything flat without such a steep cost. A few even beat Tieks on what their biggest downsides are, like arch support and break-in time.

Why Look for a Tieks Alternative?

I want to be upfront that I still like Tieks a lot. I took my original pair all over the world, and they gave out after about three years of heavy wear. I replaced them with a rose gold pair in 2020 that’s held up well and that I still wear six years later, partly because I haven’t put them through the same kind of mileage that I did with my original pair. The Italian leather is soft, high-quality, and comfortable (once broken in), and the foldable design really is as good as they say for travel.

But they aren’t right for everyone. Here are a few specific things that make people look for an alternative:

• Price – This is the biggest con to Tieks. They start around $210 for the classics and go up to $285-$385 for patents and prints. That’s a lot to spend on a pair of flats.
• Scuffing – My original pair started showing scuffs around the toes after enough trips, which is something to keep in mind with leather styles if you’re hard on your shoes. A little leather conditioner helps, but it’s upkeep you have to stay on top of. The patent options are also more durable to scuffing.
• No half sizes – If you’re between sizes, you’re stuck rounding up or down with Tieks, which can be hard for flats when you really need it to fit your foot well to be comfortable. You’d also expect Tieks to offer more size options for such an expensive shoe.
• The break-in period – Mine took some time to soften up before they were comfortable.
• The toe bump – The soft leather shows the outline of your toes, especially the big one. Some people never notice it; some people can’t unsee it. I have a slight toe bump when I wear Tieks, but it personally doesn’t bother me that much.

#1 FitFlop Delicato Bow

Most Supportive Tieks Alternative

The one thing Tieks don’t really give you is support. That thin leather insole is barely there by design, which plenty of people love, but if you want more cushioning and arch support in a pair of flats (without it looking like it), the FitFlop Delicato Bow is the perfect option.

FitFlop builds these on their Dynamicush cushioning with a molded footbed, and they carry the APMA Seal of Acceptance for supporting good foot health, so you can wear them much further than a pair of Tieks without your feet getting sore.

I love that they come in a metallic version as well, since it’s similar to my rose gold Tieks with the same dressy shine that works with anything. They also come in standard leather colors such as black, beige, and brown.

The trade-off is the shape. These have a slight square toe rather than the rounded Tieks shape, so it isn’t a one-to-one swap. They also run a little roomy through the sides and skip half sizes above a 9, so only slightly better than Tieks in terms of sizing. But for support, nothing else here comes close, and they’re much more affordable than any pair of Tieks.

#2 Yosi Samra Samara Foldable Ballet Flat

Best Look-Alike Tieks / Best Foldable Tieks Alternative

If what you actually want is a Tieks dupe, this is the closest you’ll get that’s actually still durable and good quality. The Yosi Samra Samara is the original foldable flat, and it’s the only pick on this list with the same dual-sole construction that lets Tieks fold up small enough to stash in a bag.

And the newer version of the Samara has an upgraded memory foam footbed, so they’re a touch more cushioned than my Tieks while still folding down just as flat. The elastic topline gives them that slipper feel with no rubbing at the heel, which is what you want in a flat you’re throwing on for a long travel day.

They come in a gold metallic too, which is what caught my eye given my rose gold Tieks, plus a big range of leather colors like black, navy, whiskey, and red.

The main downside to these is that they aren’t *quite* as stylish as Tieks. They have a wider toe box, which is more comfortable for your toes to splay out but doesn’t look as sleek as Tieks. And like Tieks, they only come in whole sizes, so if you’re a half size you’ll want to size up.

Overall though, at about half the price with this much overlap, the Samara is the pick I’d point a Tieks loyalist to first.

#3 Rothy’s The Daily Flat

Best Vegan Knit Alternative

Rothy’s The Daily Flat is my recommendation for anyone who’d rather skip leather altogether, whether that’s for sustainability or just personal preference. This pair is made from recycled plastic bottles, fully vegan, and machine washable.

The knit is both the trade-off and the appeal. It’s breathable and forgiving in a way leather isn’t, and it molds to your foot, though it’s a more casual look than a pair of leather Tieks. The Daily Flat also has Rothy’s Arch Effect Insole built in, so you get more arch support than most flats, including Tieks.

I will say that although Tieks’ scuffing is a major con, Rothy’s isn’t much better with how easily the knit can stain, even after putting them in the wash. So, you might want to go with a darker color if you’re going to be putting a lot of miles on these or taking them on a trip.

I know that Tieks has a vegan line as well, but it’s a lot more expensive than Rothy’s, and I personally like the look of Rothy’s more. For under $100, The Daily Flat is the most affordable of my higher-quality picks on this list that’ll last for years and give you more support. Plus, it comes in half sizes!

#4 Dolce Vita Conrad

Best Stretchy Tieks Alternative

One thing about Tieks is that they tend to dig into your heel and need a break-in period before they soften up. The Dolce Vita Conrad skips that entirely.

It has a ruched, stretchy opening and a little pull tab at the heel, so it stretches to your foot and slips on easily from the first time you put them on. That scrunched edge is the main differentiator and what gives the Conrad more give right out of the box than a pair of Tieks.

The Conrad has a clean, minimalist shape that dresses up or down, and it comes in smooth, soft leather in colors like black, bone, and light brown suede if you want a warmer look.

Dolce Vita makes it with water-based and recycled materials too, so there’s a small sustainability angle if that matters to you. The heel is nearly flat, and it runs true to size with half sizes available.

#5 Amazon Essentials Belice

Best Budget Tieks Alternative

Not everyone wants to spend three figures on a pair of flats, and the Amazon Essentials Belice is proof you don’t have to. For a fraction of the cost of the others on this list, you get a round-toe faux leather flat with a memory foam insole and a little heel pillow that keeps your foot from slipping out the back.

These are comfortable right out of the box, run true to size, and come in half sizes, as well as regular and wide widths, which is more than a lot of pricier flats offer.

The catch is what you’d expect at this price. They don’t have enough support for a full day on your feet, and the faux leather won’t hold up the way real leather does over years of wear. For a flat you keep in your bag, wear occasionally, or want in a fun color without committing much, they’re a good option.

Otherwise, if you want something in the same budget-friendly range that lasts longer, the Lucky Brand Emmie is worth a look. It’s made with real leather with an elastic opening, so it costs twice as much as the Belice, but you’ll get years out of them instead of just a season and they’re still very affordable. The trade-off is they’re stiffer at first and need a solid break-in period, whereas the Belice is soft from day one.

Final Thoughts About the Best Tieks Alternatives

The takeaway from this article is that you don’t have to spend Tieks money to get a pair of flats that you love to wear. There’s a real middle ground of flats that are comfortable, well-made, and much more affordable while still just as (if not more) comfortable and stylish as Tieks.

Which one’s right for you comes down to what made you start looking for Tieks alternatives in the first place, whether that’s support, a foldable design that’s good for travel, sustainability, an easy break-in, or just something cheap and cute for your bag. Any of these will save you money over Tieks without feeling like a downgrade.
