➡️Share this with someone you want to do a nationa ➡️Share this with someone you want to do a national parks trip with this year!

Here’s the perfect way to spend 48 hours between the two parks:

🌲 Day 1: Sequoia
Lunch at Totem Café → Crystal Cave tour (make reservations) → photo stops at Buttress Tree & Tunnel Log → Crescent Meadow hike (1.3 mi) → sunset at Moro Rock → dinner at The Peaks Restaurant → stargazing with the Sequoia Parks Conservancy.

🏞️ Day 2: Kings Canyon
Start at General Grant Tree → drive the Scenic Byway with stops at Boyden Cavern (make reservations), Grizzly Falls, Roaring River Falls & Zumwalt Meadow (1.5 mi) → pull over at the scenic turnouts for epic canyon views. If you have more time, you can head to Hume Lake for a couple of hours or do the Big Stump Loop.

🌲 Day 3: Sequoia
Photo at the park sign & Tunnel Rock → General Sherman Tree → Congress Trail loop (3 mi) through some of the most impressive sequoias in the park.

✨ 3 Things I Did But Would Skip Next Time
I tried these but left them out of the itinerary for a reason:

🚫 Hume Lake as a quick stop – Beautiful, but the road is slow and winding down. If you’re not planning to spend at least a couple of hours here, it’s not worth the detour. Also, check when the day use area closes.

🚫 Sequoia Coffee & Kitchen – The wait is too long on weekends. We got there 30 minutes after they opened, and it still took 20 minutes just to get an iced latte, and the coffee was just okay. Better to head straight into the park early.

🚫 The Gateway Restaurant – I found this stop from an Instagram reel, and I kind of wish I hadn’t. One of those influenced places that isn’t worth the hype. Great views, but disappointing food, service, and cleanliness. I’d recommend grabbing food from somewhere further away from the park entrance instead.

Here are my top 3 bucket list activities to make a trip to Mendocino unforgettable👇

1. Explore the Redwoods 🌲
Options include Hendy Woods SP, Montgomery Woods SNR, Jackson State Forest, Russian Gulch SP (waterfall hike!), and Navarro River Redwoods SP.

2. Kayak Mendocino Tour 🛶
Paddle through sea caves, blowholes, and kelp forests. It’s adventurous but still beginner-friendly and gives you a whole new perspective of the coastline.

3. Skunk Train to Glen Blair Bar 🚂
Enjoy a drink at a forest bar in the middle of the redwoods, complete with fire pits, s’mores, string lights, and live music. The drinks were surprisingly affordable; I’d just recommend getting beer or wine. The cocktails weren’t great.

Things I’d skip:
❌Glass Beach - beautiful beach with some tidepools, but the glass is mostly gone + it’s super crowded.
❌Railbikes - unique, but overpriced for what it is.

More of my favorite things to do in Mendocino:
 🌊 Walk the Mendocino Headlands
 🌸 Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
 💡Point Cabrillo Light Station
🍷 Wine tasting (love Lula Cellars!)
 🏡 Kelley House Museum
 🛍️ Boutiques in downtown Mendocino
🐟 Fresh seafood at Noyo Harbor (HarborView Restaurant at Noyo Harbor Inn for a sit-down, or Sea Pal Cove for casual fish + chips)
 🏖️ Jug Handle Beach

✨ Sequoia vs Kings Canyon vs Sequoia National Park ✨ Sequoia vs Kings Canyon vs Sequoia National Park: which would you pick first?

🌲 Crowds & Amenities
Sequoia is the more popular park, so you’ll find bigger crowds at top spots like the Giant Forest. But with that popularity comes more amenities,  like bear boxes in parking lots.

🚗 Roads
Kings Canyon is easier to drive. The Scenic Byway is still winding, but nowhere near as intense as the hairpin climb into Sequoia’s Giant Forest (we drove that road at night… not recommended 😅).

 🐻 Wildlife
Sequoia shines here. Bears are commonly spotted. We even saw one just 20 feet from the trail at Crescent Meadow. And, in general, we saw a lot more wildlife in Sequoia compared to Kings Canyon.

 ✨ Caves
Both parks have them: Crystal Cave in Sequoia felt more immersive and educational, while Boyden Cavern in Kings Canyon was fun but more touristy.

🌳 Trees
Each park has a star: General Sherman in Sequoia (the largest tree on Earth) and General Grant in Kings Canyon. Sequoia has more groves overall, so it’s the place to go if you want to be fully surrounded by giants.

🏞️ Scenery
Kings Canyon takes the edge here. Its granite walls, rivers, and canyon views feel like a cross between Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. That said, Sequoia’s Moro Rock at sunset is unforgettable.

💡For me, Sequoia felt magical for its trees and wildlife, but Kings Canyon stole my heart with its canyon views. Honestly, they complement each other so well — if you can, visit both!

📌 Save this for your trip and tell me: would you choose Sequoia for the giant trees or Kings Canyon for the canyon views?

Just a few hours north of San Francisco, Mendocino is the perfect mix of coastal charm and outdoor adventure. ✨

🥗 Lunch at Trillium Café on their ocean-view garden patio
🛎️ Check into MacCallum House Inn (we stayed in the converted water tower with a sauna + ocean views)
🍷 Dinner at MacCallum House - seasonal, fresh, and a lot made in-house

Day 2
🥐 Breakfast at GoodLife Café & Bakery (pastries + coffee)
🛶 Kayak Mendocino tour through sea caves, blowholes + kelp forests
 💡Visit Point Cabrillo Lighthouse
🌸 Explore Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens right on the ocean

🚂 Ride the Skunk Train to Glen Blair Bar for live music, drinks, and s’mores under the redwoods

Day 3

What I wish I knew before visiting Sequoia & Kings What I wish I knew before visiting Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks 🌲🏞️

👉 Stay inside the parks if you can. We stayed in Visalia and ended up driving nearly 4 hours a day just to reach the highlights.

🐻 Bears are common — we saw one just 20 feet off the trail in Sequoia! Use bear lockers for food and anything scented. In Kings Canyon, there aren’t as many lockers, so plan to carry things with you. If you see a bear, make noise and give it space.

⛰️ The altitude is no joke. Trails often start at 5–8,000 feet, and even short hikes left me winded and my muscles sore. Drink plenty of water and pace yourself.

✨ Don’t miss tours with the Sequoia Parks Conservancy. Crystal Cave is incredible (book a few weeks ahead), and their stargazing tour was also great.

💡 More tips for planning:
⏰ Buy your park pass online ahead of time. This lets you bypass the long line of cars at the entrance and go straight to the far-right lane for faster entry.
⛽ Fill your tank before you enter the parks. We only saw two gas stations inside, and they were expensive and not super convenient to get to.
📵 Don’t expect cell service — download maps, hikes, and music before you go.

📌Save this to make your trip smoother!
